Measuring

Goals and custom events

Measure conversions — page visits, custom events, scroll depth and automatic goals.

A goal turns something visitors do into a conversion you can count. Goals appear in the Goals report at the bottom of your dashboard with unique conversions, total conversions and conversion rate, and you can click any goal to filter the whole dashboard by the visitors who completed it.

Create goals in Site settings → Goals → Add goal. There are three kinds.

Pageview goals

Count visits to a page or a group of pages. Enter a path starting with /; wildcards are allowed:

Path Matches
/thank-you exactly /thank-you
/blog/* /blog/hello, but not /blog/2026/hello
/docs/** everything under /docs/

Custom event goals

Count events you send from your site. First send the event, either with JavaScript:

plausible('Signup')

or, with tagged events switched on, with a CSS class:

<button class="plausible-event-name=Signup">Create account</button>

Then add a custom event goal with the same name (names are case-sensitive). The goal form suggests event names your site has sent recently that aren't goals yet.

Custom event goals can also:

  • require property values — up to three property = value conditions, for example only count Signup where plan = pro;
  • track revenue — choose a currency to make it a revenue goal.

Event names can be up to 120 characters. pageview and engagement are reserved.

Scroll depth goals

Count visitors who scroll at least a certain percentage (1–100) down a page, for example 75% of /blog/**. This uses the scroll data the script already collects, so no extra code is needed.

Automatic goals

Turning on these tracking options in Site settings → General creates their goals for you:

Option Goal
Outbound links Outbound Link: Click
File downloads File Download
Form submissions Form: Submission
404 error pages 404

The outbound link and file download goals carry a url property, so the Properties tab shows exactly which links and files were clicked.

Display names and editing

Each goal has a display name, which defaults to the event name, Visit /path or Scroll 75% on /path. You can rename or edit goals at any time; the underlying data isn't changed.

Showing or hiding goals

Use the Show in dashboard toggle at the top of the Goals settings page to hide the Goals report without deleting anything.

Next: combine goals into a funnel.
